Alexis Simmons is a true Illini leader.
The senior from Danville, Ill., has already done it all: She’s the president of Student Alumni Ambassadors, a media intern at the Division of General Studies, Fred H. Turner Fellow in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, and much more. But at her core, she’s an Illini.
As an advertising student with a minor in public relations, Spanish, and criminology, law and society, Simmons has dedicated her four years to working with others, making a difference, and soaking up her college experience as much as she can.
“This honor culminates my Illinois experience,” Simmons said. “I've made an effort to embrace all that Illinois has to offer me, taken on different leadership positions, tried new things, and really developed a deep appreciation for this institution.”
The Homecoming Court is composed of 20 senior student leaders who are selected for their academic achievements, campus leadership, and community involvement.
Simmons credits her leadership experiences for shaping her into the confident and skillful student she is today. Simmons is also grateful for all the relationships she’s made with students and faculty, and is humbled to be recognized.
Going into her senior year, Simmons is ready to take her time after graduation to pursue either grad school or work in the ad industry. She’s excited to see where her degree takes her, and knows she received the best education from the College of Media at Illinois.
“I've met some of the most supportive people, had top-notch professors, and taken fascinating classes that have made me grow a passion for the media industry,” Simmons said. “The college has also given me a network and a ‘forever family’ of Illini who will continue to shape my life, even after I graduate.”
Simmons also said her leadership roles, such as being president of Student Alumni Ambassadors, have taught her how to persevere after failure and go against the grain, two skills she wants to take with her into the media world. Before she takes the professional world by storm, however, Simmons is happy just to be one of 20 seniors on the court and to represent Illinois.
“Being on Homecoming Court is a testament to the dedication I have to Illinois, and is recognition of the multiple ways I've given back to campus,” Simmons said. “It truly is an honor to be recognized by staff and my peers.”
