A group of U of I journalism students is headed to New York City over spring break in 2017 to visit about a dozen media outlets to learn about career and internship opportunities. The students will be meeting with influential media leaders at each stop and with U of I alumni who work at those outlets. The trip will be held March 22-24, 2017.
Assistant Journalism Professor Charles “Stretch” Ledford is in Uganda on assignment for Special Olympics International in cooperation with the University of Miami School of Communication. Professor Rich Beckman, director of Miami's Graduate Program for Journalism and Media Management, asked Ledford to accompany and mentor graduate student Emmy Petit-Frere in the production of a video showcasing Special Olympics Uganda’s work with intellectually disabled individuals. Ledford has worked as a photojournalist and multimedia producer in 53 countries. This is his 14th visit to Africa.
David E. McCraw, a 1976 journalism graduate from Monticello, Illinois, will be the 2017 College of Media convocation speaker.
McCraw is vice president and deputy general counsel for The New York Times. He has a master’s degree from Cornell and a JD from Albany Law School.
McCraw has worked as a journalist and a free-lance writer, has taught journalism and worked as a lawyer at a New York law firm. He has been with The Times since 2002 and is also an adjunct professor at NYU Law School.
