The Department of Advertising promotes diversity in its curriculum, scholarship, faculty and students. In line with the principles of our accrediting institution (AEJMC), our courses “demonstrate an understanding of gender, race ethnicity, sexual orientation and, as appropriate, other forms of diversity in domestic society in relation to mass communications” and “demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of peoples and cultures and of the significance and impact of mass communications in a global society.”

Our scholarship reflects multicultural influences in the advertising industry (Chambers), understanding of gender and culture in advertising (Nelson), and implicit attitudes and stereotypes of minority groups (Vargas).

Our students are leaders in diversity awards and initiatives in the advertising industry: More Department of Advertising students at Illinois than at any other institution have been awarded “Most Promising Multicultural Students” in the American Advertising Federation National Competition. The Class of 2015 included Jenna Liu and Alan Sanchez.

In Summer 2012, our alumni (Ashley McGowan, '08, Jessica Jones,'10, and Nicole Mitchell,'10) helped launch the Chicago Chapter of AAF's Mosaic Alumni and Friends Association (MAFA), which includes all of AAF's multicultural initiatives.
