Dan Balz Wins the 2017 John Chancellor Award

Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism announced today that Dan Balz, an American political reporter and author, is the recipient of the 2017 John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism. Balz is the chief correspondent of The Washington Post and one of the country’s most trusted political reporters. He joined the company in 1978 and has been involved in the Post’s political coverage as a reporter or editor throughout his career.

A recent journal article by assistant professor John G. Wirtz is ranked in the top 1 percent of recently published research in terms of media coverage and social media mentions, according to Altmetric, a digital science company that analyzes online attention to academic research. Wirtz’s article is ranked 864 out of the 232,922 journal articles, books, encyclopedia entries, and other scholarship published in the last year and tracked by Altmetric.

Collins named Kopenhaver Center Fellow at national educator conference

Janice Collins, assistant professor in College of Media at University of Illinois, was named a Kopenhaver Center Fellow of the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication, at the 100th Convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) in Chicago in August.

Marjorie Richmond, College benefactor, dies at 88

Marjorie Laird Richmond, philanthropist and wife of the late Jack C. Richmond, died on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2017. The Richmonds were generous donors to the University of Illinois including a $2 million gift to fund construction of the Richmond Journalism Teaching Studio, part of the WILL AM-FM-TV and Online facility.
