Journalism Alum Going to the Paralympics

When Ros Dumlao was in Northside College Prep High School in Chicago, she watched as her school’s varsity women’s basketball team won the Public League’s Chicago Conference North title and made it to the state Regional Finals. But they did not make it into her school’s student newspaper, The Hoof Beat.

Frank ’90 JOURN, elected INN board chair

The Institute for Nonprofit News has elected Laura Frank as board chair.

Frank is president and general manager of news at Rocky Mountain PBS in Denver. She founded I-News, the nonprofit investigative news organization that merged with Rocky Mountain Public Broadcasting in 2013.

Parrott participates in JEA-China convention


College of Media Associate Dean for Student Services & Academic Affairs Julian Parrott was a guest at the Journalism Education Association-China inaugural convention at Duke Kunshan University campus outside of Shanghai. JEA-China hosted 63 high school students from across China for 5 days of lectures, workshops, assignments and competitions. Parrott presented a keynote speech and also served as a student mentor/coach and as a competition judge at the convention.

Connecting WILL to the Classroom

This spring, WILL launched The 21st — 21st-century radio for the 21st state. The hour-long talk show combines relevant news and conversation with audience engagement through phone calls, social media and other digital channels. The 21st is not only facilitating discussion but also helping listeners connect with each other and with information vital to their lives. Veteran journalist and public radio host Niala Boodhoo is the host and executive producer.

AEJMC annual conference

A number of faculty and students are participating in the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication annual conference. AEJMC is a nonprofit organization of more than 3,700 educators, students and practitioners from around the globe.  The annual conference features sessions on teaching, research and public service in the various components of journalism and mass communication — from advertising and public relations to electronic and online journalism to media management and newspapers.
