Jingyi Gu is currently a first-year Ph.D. student in the Institute of Communications Research at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Jingyi received her Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Bachelor of Business Administration from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. She also graduated with distinction from Georgetown University’s Master program Communication, Culture, and Technology. Her current research interests lie at the intersection of popular culture, science and technology, and interactive media. With special focus on the representation and embodiment of gender and sexuality, her research also takes on the critical and comparative cultural studies lenses in examining media technologies and sociotechnical systems. Jingyi is also interested in exploring new media technology's role in the formation of online/virtual communities in different cultural contexts.
