Journalism students head to Washington for career/internship visits

A group of ten undergraduate journalism students will spend part of their 2016 spring break learning about career and internship opportunities in Washington, D.C. Over two days, the students will tour eight to ten media outlets in the nation’s capital and meet with U of I alumni in Washington.

The group has appointments to visit The Washington Post, Politico, NPR, Sirius XM, the Pentagon’s press and public relations office, ABC News Washington bureau and Capitol Hill press offices. Pending security approval, they may even get the chance to visit the White House.

At each stop, the students will meet with internship coordinators and with alumni who work at each media outlet plus tour newsrooms and other facilities.

Several dozen current and recent U of I journalism students have had internships in Washington including at National Geographic, the Brookings Institute, WTOP radio, the Pentagon, The Washington Post and NPR.

Journalism lecturer John Paul is traveling with the students.
