Student film accepted by two film festivals
“Grace’s World”, a short film by MACS students Caitlyn Johnson and Jeremy Marder, has been selected for two film festivals, the Feminist Film Festival and Miami Independent Film Festival
As students at the University of Illinois, Caitlyn and Jeremy have collectively produced a short advertisement for a Brown Theater Collective production as well as “Grace’s World”.
“We are humbled that “Grace’s World” has been included in this year’s Feminist Film Festival and the Miami Independent Film Festival”, Johnson and Marder said. “As aspiring filmmakers, it is an incredible feeling to know that our film will be featured in these two remarkable festivals. We plan to use this energy and excitement generated by our selection into the festivals as motivation going into our next project.”
“Grace’s World” was the pair’s semester project for Introduction to Digital Film and Media Production. “Jeremy and Caitlyn approached their project with tremendous excitement and commitment, often going above and beyond what was required for the course and it is great to see their work receiving recognition on campus and beyond,” said Dora Valkanova, Ph. D. candidate and course instructor. “I hope it will serve as motivation for them to continue to pursue their passion for making films and bringing their work to an audience.”
The Feminist Film Festival is on May 5 at the Art Theater in Champaign. The event is free and open to the public. The festival is organized and hosted by the campus Women’s Resources Center. "All films are selected by Women's Resources Center staff,” said Assistant Director Rachel Lauren Storm. “We have an interdisciplinary panel of faculty and staff judges who select five out of our six awards: Best Narrative Film, Best Documentary Film, Best Experimental Film, Fiercely Feminist Achievement, and Cinematographic Achievement. The last is our Audience Impact award, which is voted upon by attendees."
The Miami Independent Film Festival is June 25 – 26. The Mindie, as the festival is known, selects films on a monthly basis to provide steady feedback to filmmakers. Instead of waiting for months before getting an answer from the festival, filmmakers are immediately contacted if selected. Their work is privately screened every month and evaluated by a team of experts in the industry. The monthly winners will then compete to be screened at our annual event. The event aims to create a strong relationship between filmmakers, producers and distributors from all over the world.
