Study Abroad

Students in the College of Media are encouraged to take advantage of the study abroad opportunities available to them as Illinois students. There are a variety of study abroad programs ranging from faculty-led two-week immersion programs to full-semester study abroad opportunities! The information below should serve as a guide on how to approach the study abroad application process.

Scandinavian abroad trip

Step #1

Attend a First Steps Workshop through the Education Abroad office. By attending a First Steps Workshop, you can learn more about factors to consider when choosing a program such as cost, coursework availability, housing, and more.

Ideally, you are able to identify a few different programs of interest in preparation for Step #2, speaking with your academic advisor.

Step #2

Speak with your academic advisor. You’ve likely done research to determine which programs are appropriate for you based on your academic and personal interests as well as needs. The next step is to speak with your advisor about how the program(s) you have in mind would facilitate degree progress while you are abroad. Your academic advisor will ask you questions about types of courses available and relate those to your specific degree requirements.

Step #3

Meet with a study abroad advisor. Your academic advisor will provide you with contact information to meet with a study abroad advisor and liaison to the College of Media. This person will go over programs of interest as they relate to your academic, professional, and personal goals. They can help you navigate the application process and address specific questions that you have about the program(s) to which you are applying.
