Nancy Ronald and Ron Hartshorn Internship Fund

Nancy Ronald '70 JOURN, and Ron Hartshorn '69 ACES, have established an endowment to support students pursuing internships in media. During their time at Illinois neither had an internship, but in working with interns, “I have seen first hand that it can be an eye-opening and life-changing experience,” Nancy said. “We hope our gift will encourage students to dream big and apply for top internships, knowing funding support is available.” Internships may serve as entries into businesses, but they also provide workplace learning that isn’t possible in a classroom environment. Nancy and Ron were also happy to support one of the College of Media’s most pressing needs.

Nancy and Ron both grew up in Illinois, and Nancy chose the University of Illinois after attending a high school journalism conference here. She still appreciates the hands-on TV classes at WILL. “They really gave us a sense of what you had to do to produce TV,” added Nancy. She also feels her education gave her the ability to adapt to changes in technology over the years. Nancy has a degree in journalism; Ron’s degree is in agricultural communications. They have worked in radio and TV their entire careers — first in the Quad Cities area and for the last 20 years in Virginia.

Nancy and Ron both look forward to learning about the student recipients and the impact the internships will have on their academic and professional careers.
