Get to know some of our College of Media students! Emily Richie is a Class of 2025 journalism major.
What made you decide on majoring in journalism?
Journalism here at Illinois is an outstanding program and has amazing professors. When I got here, I was excited to get more hands-on experiences and to learn more about multimedia journalism. I’ve always liked capturing moments in time with my camera and looking back at photos that I have taken. It is the coolest thing to be able to take a picture and capture a story that you are able to tell and share with others. I know that I made the correct choice because of all the great experiences.
What is your career goal once you graduate from the University of Illinois?
I plan on working in sports media, by focusing on either journalism or film production. As editor-in-chief of my high school’s yearbook, I would photograph sporting events. This is where I found my love for journalism, specifically taking action photos during sporting events. Currently, I am working for Fighting Illini Productions University’s Division of Intercollegiate Athletics. In this position, I film different sports, work the video board for men's basketball, and even direct some matches. I have learned a lot about film production and how to create a highlight reel. I hope one day to be able to film or photograph NCAA volleyball, as it is my favorite sporting event to cover.
What advice would you give to students who are interested in the journalism major?
First, make sure that you take your journalism classes seriously because they provide the framework for everything you do in the future. I challenge my peers to not be afraid to break out of your comfort zone. Journalism is a very social major, and you will have to interview other people—don't let this put you off. You should also not be afraid to talk to your professors or ask questions because they are there to help you. Journalism class sizes are typically smaller. So take this as an opportunity to make friends within your major—the people you meet in your classes are an amazing resource for learning. Lastly, be creative and find something that makes you unique. Everyone has something that sets them apart, so embrace it. Enjoy doing what you love.
