Illinois earns the most student internships from Dow Jones News Fund

Dow Jones intern chartFive Department of Journalism students have earned Dow Jones News Fund internships for the coming summer.

Dow awarded 79 paid internships in data, digital and business journalism, as well as multiplatform editing, at news organizations across the country this summer. 

Interns attend one-week training sessions at five journalism schools in May and June before reporting to work. Those returning to college at the end of the summer also receive $1,500 scholarships.

  • Illini seniors Emily Ward and Jacob Diaz will train at Temple University before heading to internships at the Philadelphia Inquirer and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette respectively.
  • Sophomore Heather Schlitz, who will intern at AccuWeather, will be training at the University of Missouri in data journalism.
  • Senior Brooke Eberle will be a digital media intern at the Arizona Republic following her training at Arizona State.
  • Sophomore Sidney Madden will intern at Buzzfeed News in New York after her training at the University of Texas in Austin.

More than 775 students applied for Dow internships. Applicants are judged based on a monitored exam, written essay, experience, and telephone interview.
