The goals set forth within the College’s new strategic plan, Building Opportunities for Success, include a strong emphasis on recruiting and retaining the best students and faculty and providing them with the resources necessary to be successful in an ever-changing global marketplace. To reach these goals, we must increasingly rely on support from our alumni and friends. Significant decreases in state support combined with rising tuition costs make private contributions even more critical.
The following gift opportunities represent the current needs of the College of Media in order of impact:
Endowed Scholarships and Internships
Continued excellence depends in part on the University of Illinois attracting the most talented students from right here in Illinois, across the nation and around the world. Endowed scholarships and funding for internships allow the College of Media to remain competitive among the leading programs in the country. We need to make Illinois affordable for students and provide those students with the essential resources and experiences that prepare them for successful careers.
Likewise, most employers consider internships a requirement for students. Many of these opportunities are unpaid, and therefore unrealistic, for many of our students who cannot afford living expenses. Internship funding helps cover those costs.
College of Media Scholarship Challenge
Several alumni have come together to create an endowed scholarship for underrepresented students in the College of Media. The College’s underrepresented undergraduate population is 20 percent — approximately 200 students — and this scholarship will help us recruit and retain the best and brightest students from a number of underrepresented groups.
Spearheaded by Nancy Gravatt, Class of 1975, the Media Underrepresented Scholarship Fund has successfully surpassed its halfway mark with $17,700 in gifts. The goal is $25,000 and Nancy and others are seeking fellow alumni to join her in this important endeavor.

Endowed Funds for Innovation and Research
Excellence in innovation and research are a vital part of the College’s past success and its vision for the future. These funds will support cutting edge courses, curricula, faculty research, industry collaborations and student activities that will foster greater dialog and discovery and transform the delivery of content. These funds will also facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships with industry, and will allow the College to further distinguish itself as the leader in innovation and research in the emerging media landscape.
Endowed Professorships, Endowed Professors of Practice
Endowed professorships give the College an important advantage in recruiting and retaining the most talented faculty members in the field. Changes in the media fields are constant with the continuous adoption of new technology. Funding for Professors of Practice allow us to bring industry professionals to the College and into the classroom for short- and long-term teaching periods. Support of teaching innovation through recruitment of Professors of Practice will make our graduates better prepared to meet the demands of an ever-changing media landscape.
An endowed chair represents the highest honor the University can provide to distinguished faculty members and to attract and retain exceptional scholars. Funding for endowed chairs provides partial salary support and assistance to faculty making innovative advances in their scholarly work. Funding for endowed chairs ensures excellence in research, teaching, and innovation and contributes greatly to the College’s future growth and success.
